Summary of maintenance and special projects completed in 2018.
Vegetation management is key to preserving channel capacity for flow, and providing access for maintenance activities along the 33 miles of channel that we are responsible for.
With this year’s growing season and extra rainfall, we’ve increased from 3 up to 4 mowings per year for most dams and removing debris removal from trash racks.
In 2018, we installed our second Automated Rainfall Monitoring System. We will be able to monitor the site remotely, for rainfall and flood pool stage, critical during large storm events.
All Chippewa flood control dams are regulated by the State of Ohio – ODNR – Dam Safety. Structure 5-D required raising the top of Dam 1', to ensure the Dam will safely pass the required storm event.
All Chippewa flood control dams are regulated by the State of Ohio – ODNR – Dam Safety. ODNR required the armoring of the grassed Auxillary Spillway, to ensure the Dam will safely pass the required storm event.
All Chippewa flood control dams are regulated by the State of Ohio – ODNR – Dam Safety. Each of the eight Dams were designed by the USDA – Soil Conservation Service, to the standards in place at the time of construction in the 1970s. As standards improve, each dam is evaluated and modified as needed to meet the stricter standards in place today. Structure 5-D required raising the top of Dam about 1 foot, to ensure the Dam will safely pass the required storm event. This work was performed by MWCD staff.
