At Work For Over Fifty Years
Maintaining 33 miles of channel to ensure that flood waters will recede from the land, quickly and efficiently.
The Chippewa Subdistrict was established in 1960 for the purpose of reducing flooding and periods of inundation.
The Chippewa Subdistrict of the MWCD was established in 1960 to manage and maintain the Chippewa Flood Control Project for the purpose of reducing flooding and periods of inundation.
Our goal is to efficiently and effectively manage this flood control system while encouraging the wise use of our watershed and its natural resources.
The construction of the dams and modifications to Chippewa Creek and its tributaries through the Chippewa Watershed Project were funded through a federal program. Funding for the ongoing maintenance of the creek channel, flood control structures, banks and berms comes from an assessment of local land owners in the Chippewa Subdistrict.

During our regular inspections this year, it was observed that the lake drain valve on dam IV-A did not function correctly and needed to be replaced. The pool area of the dam was drained to allow contractors to enter the inlet structure where the valve is located approximately 20’ below the normal water surface. The contractor removed the valve and replaced it with the same model and style of valve. After the valve was replaced, the pool area was filled to its normal water level.
Constant maintenance is required with many structures over 5 decades years old. Last year, on the River Styx, we performed bank restoration & replacement of a 42' culvert. The pipe structure was made of corrugated metal pipe and had deteriorated over the past 50 years and was beginning to fail, impacting the river bank, and the maintenance berm along the River Styx Channel. This structure was replaced with corrugated N-12 pipe to ensure that it will function for many more years, and the bank was restored and seeded.
